Floods leave eight dead or missing in central region
Rising floodwaters caused by heavy rains over the past few days have left at least 8 people dead or missing in the central coastal provinces of Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, according to the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control.

Rainfall of between 200-300mm has put some places 0.5-0.8m under water, reported the committee on January 2.

Floods damaged more than 10,000hectares of rice, 400 tonnes of rice seed and 150 hectares of vegetables in Quang Ngai province. An estimated 5,000 hectares of spring-autumn rice was also submerged in Quang Nam province.

Binh Dinh province reported more than 15,000 hectares of rice flooded and many parts of its dyke system damaged. The provincial administration has allocated VND1.5 billion in emergency aid to support farmers in the affected areas.

Water levels in the central provinces’ major rivers are forecast to keep rising and may the first and second alert levels. The National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre has warned of more floods in provinces from Quang Ngai to Phu Yen in the coming days.
