The German official made the commitment at a political consultations session with Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong in Hanoi during the former’s visit to Vietnam from February 19-21.
Both host and guest discussed measures to boost the two countries’ cooperation in politics, economics, culture and education. They agreed to increase their exchange of high-ranking delegations and increase trade and investment relations.
Education and training is one of the priority areas of cooperation between Germany and Vietnam, said the German official, pledging that his country will develop Vietnam-Germany University into a leading educational establishment in the region.
He said the German Government will expand its scholarship programme by receiving 100 Vietnamese students each year to pursue MA and PhD degrees in Germany.
For his part, Mr Cuong said that Vietnam will create favourable conditions for German businesses to invest efficiently in the country. He voiced support for Germany’s plan to build an international school in Ho Chi Minh City.
The two diplomats shared the view that Vietnam and Germany will cooperate closely in organising the “Germany Year in Vietnam” and “Vietnam Year in Germany” in 2010 to mark 35 years of their diplomatic ties.
At the end of the working session, they signed a memorandum of understanding to increase cooperation in the future.
The German diplomat met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem who welcomed Mr Ammon’s visit to concritise high-level agreements reached during a visit to Germany in March 2008 by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
