The programme themed “Grateful Candles”, organised by the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in coordination with the provincial Youth Union, involved Quang Tri Teaching College, Lac Hong University, Quang Binh University, Hue University and the Youth Union at the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.
The National Martyrs Cemetery, located in Vinh Truong commune, Gio Linh district is the biggest one of its kind in the country and is one of 72 martyrs cemeteries in the province.
The cemetery contains the remains of martyrs who sacrificed their lives on the Truong Son road during the war of resistance against US aggressors. The remains of martyrs have been buried there since 1974, and at present, there are 10,263 graves lying in 5 big areas, 21 smaller areas and one area for martyrs who remain unidentified.
The “Grateful Candles” programme was held in over 2,500 cemeteries nationwide at the tombs of 570,000 martyrs.
