The missile test was carried out despite the offer by the administration of new US President Barack Obama to engage Iran in direct talks if it “unclenches its fist”.
Iran’s Fars News Agency said the domestically produced missile had a range of 110km and was designed for use by military aircraft against naval targets.
Citing Iran’s Defence Ministry, said Press TV said the country had “successfully armed some of its frontline fighter jets with long range air-to-surface missiles.”
Iran often stages war games or tests weapons to show its determination to counter any attack by foes such as Israel and the United States.
Meanwhile, Turkey would consider serving as mediator between Iran and the US, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said on March 8 after meeting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and shortly before leaving for Tehran.
Turkey, the only predominantly Muslim member of NATO, has said it can help resolve the standoff over Tehran’s nuclear programme between the US, its traditional ally, and its neighbour Iran, with which it also enjoys good ties.
