Representatives from the central provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien - Hue and Quang Ngai, and a number of foreign embassies, and international organisations have discussed joint efforts to deal with unexploded bombs and mines (UXO).
The six provinces saw nearly 10,530 people killed by UXO over the past 34 years since the war ended and 12,230 others injured.
At the two-day talks that ended on November 20 in Quang Tri, the participants discussed the current UXO problem and the dissemination of information and education on awareness of the on-going threat. They also heard reports on assistance to the victims and the victims’ opinions on related issues.
It is proposed that the mass media undertake a long-term strategy to promote awareness of the serious injuries and loss of life and property cause by UXO in Vietnam, and call on international organisations and NGOs to help the country conduct bomb clearance and provide care for bomb victims, along with raising public awareness to reduce further accidents through education.
During the event, the participants visited the bomb and mine education centre in Dong Ha town and the Con Trung resettlement village in Cam Lo district. They also presented gifts to families of bomb victims in Hai Lang and Trieu Phong districts.
