Making breakthrough in overseas Vietnamese activities
The first Meeting of Overseas Vietnamese concluded on November 23 with a host of practical proposals aimed at making a breakthrough in Overseas Vietnamese-related activity.

Participants in the meeting proposed that the Government quickly complete policies aimed at creating the best possible conditions for overseas Vietnamese to buy houses in the homeland and simplify immigration procedures for them to acquire, renounce and retain nationality and to enjoy pension and social security after returning home.

The State should make a breakthrough in attracting and supporting overseas Vietnamese experts in returning home to work for the country. Ministries and departments should set up expert groups in important fields to exchange information with overseas partners.

Participants also urged the State to negotiate and sign bilateral and multilateral agreements and documents to help overseas Vietnamese stay long in residence countries. In addition, they discussed measures to preserve and promote traditional identity, teach and learn Vietnamese, and complete the organisational structure of overseas Vietnamese communities.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairman of the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA), Nguyen Thanh Son, said that such ideas will serve as a foundation for the Party and State to adopt more effective and realistic policies.

On the occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the COVA presented certificates of merit and insignia to 21 organisations and individuals who have made positive contributions to the national development.

In the afternoon of the same day, delegates attended a meeting and  a music concert to mark the 50th anniversary of COVA.
