National Fencing Championship 2009 kicks off in Hai Duong
Bui Van Thai won a gold medal in the men's foil individual
The fifth National Fencing Championship, held by the General Department of Physical Training and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Hai Duong provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, kicked off at the Hai Duong provincial sport hall on December 2.  

The championship attracted competitors from six provinces and cities including Hanoi, Hai Duong, Ho CHi Minh City, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong and Binh Phuoc. Many of them are leading fencers who have won national and international prizes such as Tran Thi Len from Hai Duong, Bui Van Thai from Hanoi, and Tong Van Thuong from Bac Ninh.

There will be three events including Sabre, Epee and Foil with 12 sets of medals six of which are for individual eliminations and six for team eliminations.

In the individual competition, there will be a qualifying round and a knock-out round while the team competition includes a knock-out round to select the two best teams for the final.

The opening ceremony was followed by two finals, the women’s epee individual and the men’s foil individual.

In the women’s epee individual, Tran Thi Len (Hai Duong) won the gold medal while the silver medal went to Ha Thi Sen (Hanoi) and the bronze to Doan Thi Yen (Hai Duong) and Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa (Hanoi).

In the men’s foil individual, the gold medal went to Bui Van Thai (Hanoi), Nguyen Van Dac (Hanoi) won the silver while Tran Van Anh (Hanoi) and Cao Quoc Cuong (Ho Chi Minh City) won the bronze.

The championship will last until December 7.
