President opens nation’s first branch of US college
President Nguyen Minh Triet on May 6 called for more partnerships between Vietnamese and US universities and colleges as he attended the opening ceremony of the first affiliate of Texas-based Houston Community College (HCC) in HCM City.

Speaking to HCC lecturers, students and the teaching staff of the Saigon Institute of Technology (Saigontech) in Quang Trung Software Park in District 12, Mr. Triet hailed the successful partnership/co-operation between the American college and Saigontech.

The US$20 million Saigontech Quang Trung Tower offered an international-standard environment for studies and research, not only for today but also for the future, said the chairwoman of Saigontech’s management board, Nguyen Thi Ut Em.

Established as the Saigon Institute of Information Technology in 2001, Saigontech mainly offers IT education. In 2003 it entered into an agreement with the US college to offer an Associate in Applied Sciences (AAS) programme in IT.

Another agreement between the two in 2007 also enables Saigontech to offer academic courses in business administration, marketing, international business, accounting and geographic information sciences. The institution was then renamed the Saigon Institute of Technology.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, American Ambassador Michael Michalak applauded the pioneering spirit of Saigontech in offering the Associate of Applied Science Degree programme which is “vital to Vietnam’s modernising economy”.

Saigontech now has more than 3,000 students majoring in AAS Computer Science and Business.
