Quang Nam province asks NGOs’ assisstance
A leading official from the central province of Quang Nam on November 25 called for assistance from foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

At a conference to strengthen cooperation between the province and NGOs in Hanoi, Tran Kim Hung, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Council, highlighted several priority areas for investment.

The conference was jointly held by the provincial People’s Committee, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) and the People’s Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM).

According to a representative from the provincial Department of External Affairs, during the 2005-2009 period, foreign NGO aid for Quang Nam province increased by 5-7 percent annually. Their assistance has proven very effective, and has contributed to the province’s socio-economic development.

In 2008, 58 projects got underway in Quang Nam province with the disbursed capital reaching US$1.4 million. The disbursement value in the first half of 2009 rose dramatically to US$2.1 million. The NGO-funded projects mainly focused on such areas as health care, education, infrastructure, technology transfer, micro-financing, environmental protection, disaster mitigation and gender equality.

A lot of the aid was used to address the consequences of the American war and other issue related to economic development, poverty reduction, environmental protection, emergency aid and social benefits.
