Role model movement launched to mark Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has called on fellow Vietnamese countrymen and soldiers to participate in a special exemplary role model movement in anticipation of Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary in 2010.

Mr Dung, who is also chairman of the Central Emulation and Reward Council, made the call at a ceremony in Hanoi on June 14 to launch the movement.

He recalled the late President Ho Chi Minh’s appeal for a national patriotic emulation movement on June 11, 1948 and said the entire Party, army and people had since united to overcome countless difficulties, drive away foreign enemies and wrest back independence and freedom for the nation. He said the movement was later enthusiastically embraced by people from all social strata in every corner of the country, creating invincible strength and a driving force behind the success of national construction and development.

Over the past years, Mr Dung said, the Party and State have paid special attention to the movement, by issuing many legal documents on emulation and rewards. Many such movements have been launched in various sectors and exemplary role models have been honoured and replicated across the country, making a practical contribution to the country’s Doi Moi (Renewal) process during the past 20 years.

The Central Emulation and Reward Council has decided to launch a special exemplary role model movement across the country to mark the capital city’s 1,000th anniversary which falls on October 10, 2010.

To make the movement successful, the PM asked sectors and localities to bring into full play the strength of the entire political system and combine the movement with the implementation of the Party and Government’s resolutions on socio-economic development in 2009.

He asked sectors and localities to work out their own plans of action and encouraged people of all social strata to actively respond to the movement to make it a massive and influential activity.

Hanoi must take the lead in this movement, focusing on implementing solutions to prevent the economic slowdown, maintain steady growth and ensure social welfare, while speeding up construction work on major projects for its millennium anniversary, said Mr Dung.

He urged Hanoi to enhance urban management and build a “Green, Clean and Beautiful” city to promote its image abroad and create a favourable environment for cooperation and development.

The Central Emulation and Reward Council presented the government’s emulation flags to 60 collectives in recognition of their outstanding achievements in exemplary role model movements.
