Storm victims receive over US$7 million in relief aid
The Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) has received more than US$7 million in foreign and domestic donation to support Ketsana and Mirinae storm victims in the Central and Central Highland regions.

The money has been donated by foreign governments, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, non-governmental organisations, collectives and individuals.

VRC has bought and distributed rice, food and other necessities such as tents, mosquito-nets, drinking water and water filters to local people in the stricken areas.

On November 16, a representative of New Zealand’s International Aid and Development Agency handed over US$370,000 in emergency aid to assist the storm victims.

In a press release by the US Embassy in Vietnam the same day, the US Government will provide additional aid worth US$250,000 to support Mirinae storm victims in central Vietnam. The money will be channelled through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the US Agency for International Cooperation (USAID).

The aid will be used to buy blankets, water tanks, mosquito-nets, soaps and water filtering tablets for more than 28,000 people living in the storm-affected areas.

Earlier, the US government provided US$750,000 in relief aid to support Ketsana storm victims.

Ketsana pounded central Vietnam in September, killing more than 161 people, while Mirinae slammed into the same region a month later, taking over 100 lives.
