US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence visits Vietnam
Vietnam will continue to work closely with the US to search for Americans missing in action during the American War in the country, says Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.

While receiving the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for POW/MIA affairs, Robert Newberry, in Hanoi on November 13, Mr Minh urged the US to support Agent Orange victims and pay attention to Vietnam’s humanitarian efforts to overcome the consequences of the war.

Newberry thanked Vietnam for effective cooperation in MIA issues and said he would try his best to promote friendship and mutual understanding between the two governments and people.

During his visit from November 9-13, Newberry also met with Deputy Defence Minister, Lieu. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh and Deputy Chief of the Ministry of Public Security’s Security Department, Maj. Gen. To Lam.

He also worked with the directorate of the Vietnam agency responsible for the MIA search and visited an excavation site dug by a joint Vietnamese-American team in the mountainous northern province of Lao Cai.

He handed over a number of belongings of Vietnamese soldiers fallen during the war to the Vietnamese officers.
