Vietnam edges Kuwait 1-0 in friendly
Despite the hot weather in the Gulf region, Vietnam chalked up a surprising defeat against host team Kuwait 1-0 in a friendly match at Friendship&Peace Stadium on May 31.

Midfielder Trong Hoang who was tapped in for the first time, scored the only goal for Vietnam in the 35th minute of the game.

Kuwaiti players applied tactical pressure in hopes of equalizing the score. However, they were all beaten back by goal keeper Dinh Hoang La who was in inspired form, thwarting their attacks.

Veteran striker Thanh Binh missed a chance to double the score when the game had several minutes to go.

The win was a confidence-builder for Vietnamese players before they enter the Asian Cup 2011’s qualifying round. Vietnam is in Group D with China, Lebanon and Syria .

At the Asian Cup 2007, Vietnam qualified for the quarter-finals but lost to Iraq who later became the Asian champions.
